Hair on the Avenue Medulla S/S Trends 2012

Hair on the Avenue latest short-film has been released. In collaboration with director Peter Tamlin, the team at Hair on the Avenue has put together the most sought after looks of the season in a film entitled Medulla – showcasing the movement and fluidity of S/S 2012 hair trends. See Toronto Moda's post on last year's Hair on the Avenue film launch here

Out of the forecasted trends.. this one holds dear to my heart.

Texture is intrinsic and untamed.
Influenced by tribal trends in fashion, hair is wild and free this season. Nurture the fluidity of your locks and enhance your true texture.
“Recognizing your hairs natural elements will nourish your texture and keep your hair healthy,” says stylist, Anthony Ingraldi, “Embrace your curls and let your waves flow, confidence will ensue,” he adds.

Annabelle x Marcelle

Affordable brands Annabelle x Marcelle launched their Spring 2012 beauty & makeup products at the Thompson Rooftop Lounge featuring skincare and make-up treats, cocktails & hors d'oeuvres. The night featured an onsite DIY lipgloss station - I ended up with a bronze colour. My favourite product of the night is the Marcelle Vitamin C hydrating gel, using it for a couple weeks I've noticed a difference in the appears in my skin - brighter, supple, and the lessening the dark spots (which becomes more obvious as my tan fades). These specially-priced packages will not be available at any other time during the year.
Below are my two picks for this year's Beautylicious.

Joanna’s Treatment #1
Mync Lash Lounge & Brow Bar

104 Yorkville Avenue, 2nd Floor
(647) 351-8888
www.myncbeauty.com
twitter @myncbeauty

Some argue the most striking feature of your face is your eyes. So why not ensure the lashes & brows are groomed and primed to help bring them out? After watching numerous episodes of the Kardashians and their camel-looking eyelashes (yes I said it!) – it’s easy to get turned off from false lashes. But doing some research I thought it would be worth a try, Mync Lash & Brow is offering a “Born Lucky” lash extension at $125. This lash treatment includes 45 lashes of synthetic mink per eye and is their most popular service. The aesthetician that applied my lashes was knowledgeable about the application, care, and products used. I was so impressed I had to get a brow shaping, since it didn’t seem right to have pretty lashes with outgrown brows. The salon is modern, spacious, with a large bay window with the lash lounge beds spread across. (easy to take over an hour nap under the fuzzy blanket).
After three weeks and a vacation to Europe - I am convinced. I continue to receive numerous compliments on my long “natural” lashes, and have not worn mascara or eyeliner for weeks – and still going strong.

Joanna’s Treatment #2

A great close-to-home-getaway to treat someone or be treated.

Oscar Night Hair Styles

Starting counting down the hours because tonight is the Oscars! An important part of every outfit is the hair style. How can we forget last years top pick, Sandra Bullock, amazing style from head to toe. Her sleek side parted hair and bright pink lips were the talk for days. We all know how important a hair style can be from our first semi-formal, prom and maybe even a wedding day.

Mark Townsend is no stranger to celebrity hair. In the past, he has styled Reese Witherspoon, Rachel McAdams, Lea Michele and  Jennifer Lawrence, among others. Now that Dove Hair Care System is in the scene, Mark is using them as his styling tool. You too can work with the Dove Hair Care System for your hair, it may not look as perfect as Marks' - that takes years of practice, but your hair will leave smooth and nourished.

So keep your eyes peeled tonight. Who's look is your favourite? What hair style will you be asking your hair dresser for?

Laser Hair Removal

Why is it that so many people talk about it like it's a unicorn?

Everyone asks about it yet most know very little about the procedure. Instead of Googleing all my information like most people do, I set up an appointment with Dr. Fred Weksberg, owner and medical director of The Weksberg Centre for Cosmetic Dermatology, who educates me on the procedure and the machine he uses, the LightSheer Duet.

Laser hair removal has many advantages like convenience and permanence, but it also has a higher cost than other options. Each treatment costs upwards of $150. Depending on the person and their hair type, the number of treatments can range; some might need three treatments, some might need eight. It is also important to go to a trained specialist when getting this done, burnt skin is not a good look on anyone.

For beginners, such as myself, laser hair removal works best on dark hair and a light complexion. The laser targets the pigment in the hair so if you're blonde, chances are you're out of luck. Those with dark hair and dark skin can still get this done but the strength of their laser will be set to a lesser strength to avoid blistering of the skin. This is also why it is important to stay away from UV rays prior to your treatment. You should also shave the area being treated right before you go.

The machine Dr. Weksberg uses is different than the others he has used in the past. This one has a greater surface area for quicker treatment times and it has suction so you feel less, if any, pain.

As I raise my arm over my head, my underarm is ready to go! Dr. Weksberg checks the settings and gives the thumbs up. The laser is calibrated and raised to my underarm. The suction begins. In seconds, it's over. The procedure is repeated until the area of my underarm is done and then they move onto the next one. The treatment is over in less than 5 minutes.

Speed: Under 5 minutes
Level of Pain: 1 out of 10 - I could feel the suction, but that was about it
Effectiveness: Unsure yet, it has only been a week since my treatment

I am not exaggerating when I say that it took less than 5 minutes. The preparation took the majority of the time but the actual laser treatment was much faster than I anticipated. I was definitely shocked when I realized it was over, I also expected it to be more painful because someone said it felt like an elastic band snapping on your skin, but because of the suction, the pain is virtually eliminated. My skin was pink for about an hour but shortly after, it subsided.

I'm curious to see the results of my first treatment. If you've gone for laser hair removal, I'd love to hear your input. Give me a few weeks and I'll report back with my results!

2011 Must-Haves!

Our journey into 2011 has begun and with it, a list of new resolutions and a huge list of wants. Following fashion magazines, trends and influencers has never been easier with the evolution of blogging, Twitter and the ubiquitous smartphone.

We decided to catch up with a few of our favourite influencers in the fashion and beauty realm and share what they believe are 2011 must-haves.

Who: Geekigirl aka Anita Clarke
@geekigirl
The founder and Editor-in-Chief of the popular Toronto fashion blog, I want - I got.

Must-Haves:
The Bag: I'm still loving the PS1 from Proenza Schouler so I think any type of schoolboy satchel is pretty fun

The Shoes: I'm not into kitten heels so I'm still on the platform bandwagon. It should be a good season for colour.

Skincare: Dermalogica is my tried and true skincare regime.                                    Photo by Rannie Turingan

Make-up: I don't really wear too much makeup but I recently discovered Dalish Cosmetics's Ruby Red lipstick. It's a great colour that I will have to keep stocked this year.

I Want list for 2011: I'm looking forward to wearing some Philip Sparks womenswear in 2011.

Who: Janine Falcon, beauty expert, Face Kit editor of The Kit (thekit.ca) and founder of BeautyGeeks (imabeautygeek.com)
@janinefalcon

Must-Haves:
The Bag: One that comes with a personal assistant -- he doesn't have to be any taller than 6'3" -- to carry it would be sweet. My bag is typically ridiculously heavy with my laptop and papers, so he'll have to be eight-pack-abs strong.

The Shoes: I'm all over Spring's kitten heels. They're ladylike and quite leg-flattering. They'd be perfect if they came with a car and driver so as to preserve their prettiness and the health of my feet, what with all my running around to appointments.

Skincare: Skincare must-haves for me include daily SPF, gentle exfoliation assistance, hydration and a measure of oil control. It doesn't come in just one item, so at the moment I'm into Neostrata Daytime Moisture Infusion Cream SPF 15, which contains a hefty amount of hydrating hyaluronic acid plus sunscreen; Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant, a rice-enzyme powder which makes a gentle exfoliating paste when water hits it; La Mer The Oil Absorbing Lotion, which I sometimes use in my T-zone because I can't resist the light scent, lovely texture and, to be honest, the La Mer story; and MAC Blot Powder/Pressed or CoverFX Matte FX pressed powder, both of which stop my face from feeling like someone's about to fry an egg on it. I may add a new tool or two, too -- I love the Clarisonic cleansing system concept. I think of it as the electric toothbrush of face care (electric toothbrushes are far more effective cleaning tools than the basic toothbrush you get from your cheap-o dentist). And come 2011, a big brand is launching a much less expensive motorized-brush facial cleansing tool at drugstores; I'll have to compare them.

Make-up: I have makeup staples such as Make Up For Ever Aqua Eyes waterproof liners and the aforementioned blot powders. However some new things -- that may or may not be available just yet -- are vying for place in my personal kit, such as:

Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Inspired by Carmindy Forever Stay Eye Pencil in Deep Jade (it's creamy, long-lasting and gorgeous with hazel eyes -- actually, it's already in my kit)
Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil (also super creamy and long-wearing -- and already in my kit)
Physicians Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum in Ultra Black (it's a liquid liner with a built-in Japanese lash-boosting peptide -- smart! and already in my kit)
Rimmel Match Perfection Concealer, which gives impressive coverage and blend-into-skin ability for the price
The Body Shop Tailored Cheek Tint, a gel that reacts with your skin's pH for a customized flush (Smashbox did it first with O-Glow, and Stila launched a powder version last year which is also great)
Smashbox In Bloom Cream Cheek Duo in Blushing/Peony (such pretty Spring shades)
Joe Fresh Style Matte Lipstick in Fuchsia (THE lip colour for Spring -- nearly every Canadian beauty editor is in love with it; it's already in my lip-colour rotation)
• pretty much any YSL Rouge Volupté Lipstick that comes out (dreamy texture and great staying power; worth the splurge)
OPI Axxium manicures (I'm a tad obsessed with this soak-off gel stuff -- I get three weeks of strong, chip-free colour, and my nails are still super healthy although I've been having Axxium manis back-to-back since April 2010)
• and of course I need Chanel's nail lacquer in Riva, which is the colour of shallow Caribbean sea in the sunlight (I can apply it over Axxium and have it last ages because it's going over a synthetic surface, then remove it days later and still have my super-shiny Axxium finish)

I think I need a bigger makeup kit.

The Beauty Essential: As for my one beauty essential, is it cheating to say my skincare-and-makeup bag, which would also include an electric toothbrush and Crest Pro-Health Toothpaste -- if I get rescued I still want to have a decent smile -- as well as Head & Shoulders Smooth & Silky shampoo and conditioner because when I get stressed I need a little flake defense? Okay, I can save space with the 2-in-1 Head & Shoulders instead. Oh, and I'm going to need a Venus Embrace razor and blades, seriously. Plus Weleda Sea Buckthorn Oil, to help my skin in case I get a touch too much sun exposure. I also reserve the right to consider Vancouver-based La Mer genius facialist Edmond Lee, whose gifted intuitive touch when it comes to facial massage can release tension in the whole body. And what is it with Vancouver? Sidney has Alana Decourt at Fresh Esthetics Studio -- as talented as Edmond, she's a wonderfully intuitive masseuse who hits every pressure point without your ever having to direct her.

Okay, can we arrange for me to be stranded on an island with Edmond and Alana, and my skincare-and-makeup suitcase? Oh nuts. Can the ladies at Tips Nail Bar on the Danforth come too?

Who: Lisa Tant, Editor-in-Chief Flare Magazine

The Bag: Celine. I love Phoebe Philo's simply structured designs. They're also incredibly practical. My fall Celine bag is mid-size but has room for all of my essentials. Second choice, Victoria Beckham. She has a terrific eye for fashion and her new handbag collection is luxe, gorgeous and functional.

The Shoes: I love heels but spring is the season for flats. I have my eye on the metal trimmed flats at Lanvin and Chloe's ballet-inspired slippers.

Skincare: I test a lot of the products that come into Flare so I don't have any particular favourites. I take great care with my skin and that always starts with an SPF 15 moisturizer.

Make-up:
I'm going to experiment more with colour. I'm already loving wearing a fuchsia lipstick. Next up: coloured eye liner.

Dirty Little Fashion Secrets: Fashion secrets are never dirty. I'm happy to share all of my tips and hot finds on Twitter, Flare.com and Flare.

Resurrect your skin with Rosa Arctica

My mom was Toronto Moda’s test subject for Kiehl’s newest advanced daily moisturizing cream Rosa Artica. This uses a rare & resilient regeneration flower called Haberlea Rhodenpensis – part of the familiar African Violet species of flowers(pictured below). This flower is able to survive up to 31 months without water, and can return to life when water is re-introduced. Amazing!

After two week of using the cream my mom told me her skin felt “a lot smoother” and “younger-looking”, her only negative comment was that it smelled “a bit grassy”. The latter comment she admits she is used to using cosmetic products with less natural ingredients and infused with perfume. Other key ingredients is are: vitamin E, lipids, squalane (found in olives) & glycerine.

Overall, she plans to continue using Rosa Artica, and was excited about the benefits: minimizing the appearance of fine lines, increase firmness & elasticity, & smooth overall texture of skin. Consumer testing of this product of women between the ages of 40 & 50 years old who used Rosa Artica daily for 4 weeks reported that skin appeared revitalized, denser, hydrated & smoother. This exciting new product from Kiehl’s will be available in stores February 2011. Thanks to Kiehl's National Education Manager Donna Paty and Skincare chemist Angelike Galdi!

SilkPeel - Radiant Glow in 30 Minutes

With the holidays over, it's time for the new year resolutions. The goal this year is the same as the goal every year, to look our best. That could mean 10lbs lighter, better body and maybe better skin.

The last thing we want is to fall into a rut. I kick started my year with a SilkPeel treatment.

We've all heard of microdermabrasion and many have tried it but if you know anything about it, it tends to leave skin red and sensitive after the procedure. SilkPeel uses a similar procedures minus the irritation. SilkPeel exfoliates with "wet abrasion", which withdraws toxins while infusing our skin with vitamins, nutrients and anti-oxidants. Skin feels smooth and the fine lines are diminished, resulting in a visible radiant glow.

I have the same effect after a hot yoga session. Hot yoga requires 90 minutes of an intensive work out in an excruciatingly hot temperature, but at the end of it my skin is beaming because all the skin's toxins are sweated out. My goal is to continue both and wait for the results. At the moment, my skin is loving SilkPeel. It isn't something I'm about to give up anytime soon.

StriVectin - Scheduled Results

How many times have you purchased a product, used it for a few days and due to lack of results, you then discard it. You may not realize that some products need time before you see the magic.

Patience is required when working with many products. Having a timeline with the result indicator helps us prepare for the product to understand the results.  StriVectin realized that this is the case when they conducted their research. and the solution of labeling their products to reveal the timeline for the result of using the product help the customer to realize that being patient will reap the reward.

StriVectin conducted their research under rigorous scientific standards, proven and documented in years of clinical trials. They know the only result we are interested in is that of anti-aging, healthy-looking and younger-looking skin, and the result that the our skin gets better over time.

For the StriVectin-SD, Intensive Concentrate for Stretch Marks & Wrinkles, on the front of the box, it lists the results of the 2 week mark, then 4 weeks and finally the final results of using this product on week 8. The wait is worth the result.

NADA Flash Mob!

If you were Nada Shepherd how would you create buzz for your new perfume?

Nada is anything but conventional with edgy designs and even a 3D movie to showcase one of her fashion lines. It goes without saying that a simple press conference wouldn't do, but a flash mob in Dundas Square, now that's a whole other story.

The NADA fragrance is dark and sexy, and all around delicious. You can buy it at the Nada pop-up store in Bayview Village but why not win one? To get your hands on a limited edition signed bottle of the signature fragrance make your way to http://www.nadadesigns.com/perfume/nada.html

CoolSculpting by Zeltiq® (Part V) - The Verdit

It has been a bit over two months since my first CoolSculpting by Zeltiq® treatment. I met with Global TV's Kathleen a couple of weeks ago to discuss the result of treatment thus far. Kathleen asked if I noticed any difference since my first treatment. On the day of our interview, I pulled out an old pair of jeans that have been sitting in the back of my closet for the pass seven or eight years ago. It was my favourite pair and for the past few years, putting it on has been more than just a struggle. Being optimistic, I decided to try it on for the interview and I was pleasantly surprised. They glided on and shockingly, they fit!

What does putting on a pair of old jeans mean to me? Well for starters, it means I lost at least an inch. I get on a scale once a year when I have my physical. I don't have a scale at home so I don't weight myself regularly. I gauge my weight by how my clothes fit and jeans are a pretty good indicator of weight. The CoolSculpting by Zeltiq® treatment was said to take about eight weeks before I would start to see results. I am right on target.

For those who exercise regularly and have a healthy lifestyle but still can't seem to get rid of that annoying love handle, CoolSculpting by Zeltiq® can definitely help.  It has been a little over two months since my first treatment and I am hoping to continue to lose a bit more within the next four months. I have enjoyed my CoolSculpting treatments and I'm now approaching the end of my journey. I will continue with my exercise and healthy eating habits. With the combination of these, I am hoping that I will continue to capitalize on the treatment.

TEOSYAL - Dermal Filler

Not everyone is ready for cosmetic surgery but with other technologies, you don't have to be. Now, there is "Teosyal", a non-invasive injectable filler made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance found within the body.  Tesoyal is a new range of hyaluronic acid-based gel dermal fillers, which are capable of rehydration and revitalization by restoring volume, redefining, accentuating and softening contours of the face and increasing lip volume. One injection can last up to eighteen months, a longer lasting effect over other injectables.

Since there is no down time for the Teosyal dermal filler, the patient can head over to the physican's office, have the injection done and be back at work within the hour. Teosyal products are available exclusively at physician's offices across Canada.

As a woman over 50, I am confident and proud of my age but I also know that feeling great also means looking great. Knowing that Teosyal is available, gives me extra confidence to grow old and look fabulous even if I need a little help along the way. It's good to know that Teosyal is within reach and is a reasonable option.
