Jean-Louis Dumas, Chief Executive of Hermes, the infamous French luxury brand, passed away Saturday May 1st, 2010, in his home in Paris. At seventy two years of age Mr. Dumas spent twenty eight years at the helm of Hermes, transforming and reviving it to its current standard as we know it today.
Founded in 1837 Hermes started off making saddles and horse gear. Although they still do, and they do it very well, Hermes is known for their scarf's and the ever popular Birkin bags. Starting at just over $6,500 the Birkin bag is completely hand made and has a wait list of about 5 years. In fact, all of the merchandise sold at Hermes is hand made, that's why it is considered one of the best and only 'real' luxury brands in the world.
With three hundred stores globally, the revenues have never been higher. Reporting just over 2.5 billion dollars in revenue last year, Jean Louis Dumas will always be remembered alongside the iconic Hermes.
