ABSOLUT® VODKA launched its 2011 limited-edition bottle ABSOLUT® MODE last night at Malaparte (TIFF Bell Lightbox). Spanning eight decades of fashion design, the museum-style exhibit was curated by Jeanne Beker, host of CTV’s Fashion Television.
The one-night only exhibit featured personal items of clothing and accessories from Canadian style icons like Jeanne Beker, Suzanne Rogers, Stacey Kimel, Bernadette Morra and Lisa Tant. Dresses on display included Chanel, YSL, Oscar De La Renta, & Christian door including vintage couture. Also, were fashion illustrations by Fredereick Watson and new touch-screen design technology by Nytric Limited from Ryerson University School of Fashion.

“Fashion is the inspiration behind the beautifully designed ABSOLUT® MODE bottle and the genesis of this year’s event,” says Chris Bhowmik, Senior Brand Manager for ABSOLUT® VODKA in Canada. “ABSOLUT® created this unique exhibit in consultation with Jeanne Beker to pay tribute to Canadian and international designers and fashion leaders.”

Affordable brands Annabelle x Marcelle launched their Spring 2012 beauty & makeup products at the Thompson Rooftop Lounge featuring skincare and make-up treats, cocktails & hors d'oeuvres. The night featured an onsite DIY lipgloss station - I ended up with a bronze colour. My favourite product of the night is the Marcelle Vitamin C hydrating gel, using it for a couple weeks I've noticed a difference in the appears in my skin - brighter, supple, and the lessening the dark spots (which becomes more obvious as my tan fades). If you live or visiting Montreal try to stay posted on their bi-annual warehouse sales!

Apothic Red launched their 2010 blend at the Thompson Hotel in Toronto, hosted by Notable TV's Julian Brass. Event go-ers sipped on the newest blend and snacked on chocolate pairings. The wine consists of flavours of rhubarb and black cherry complemented by hints of mocha and vanilla. I absolutely LOVED it. Available at the LCBO.

Baby Steinberg S/S12

Eco-friendly designer Baby Steinberg took her own unique brand and style of “reduce, reuse and recycle” to the runway of LG Fashion Week. Steinberg’s collection entitled Remnants was created using the cast-off fabric and selvedge that is often thrown out.

Each dress in this 20-piece collection is a testimony to the spirit and ingenuity she had discovered while teaching the handicraft to children in the Brazilian slums of Favelas. With bright pops of colour and mixing of floral patterns Steinberg creates the perfect eco-friendly collection ready for spring with her own added Brazilian flare, from what would otherwise be sitting in the bottom of a wastebasket on the design room floor.

Fun, loose and flirty was the trend through a majority of the pieces, but was equally balanced out by some heavier knits and sleek one-shoulder silhouettes reminiscent of the 20’s. Set to the original song “Thief of Dances” by Toronto’s own Kevin Quain, I have yet to see a collection correspond to the runway song so well.

From runway to fashion installation Steinberg worked the creativity she has shown in her shows at Alternative Fashion Week by turning the runway floor into a fashion museum of sorts with all her models taking their place on pedestals and giving the opportunity for the fashion crowd to get up close and really appreciate the construction that went into each dress.

Caroline Neron S/S12 Jewellery Show

They say all that glitters is not gold, and Montreal singer/actress turned designer Caroline Neron showed us that the saying holds true with her line of jewellery shown at LG Fashion Week for the first time.

Going off the theme of three goddesses representing the different elements of earth, water and air. The show started off with a hauntingly ethereal vocal performance as models elegantly glided down the runway, draped in swarvoski tear drop crystals, cascading gem stones and semi-precious stones only covered by nude bodysuits, sheer capes and bathing suits.

Neron represented the elements through the use of the symbolic colours often associated with these 3 aspects, The dark hues of tiger’s eye and the sheen from golden shadow crystals to represent earth, Light blue and translucent blue gems and teardrop swarvoski crystals representing water, Grey pearls and crystals with light green hues were in place to represent air.

Moving from haunting vocals to live tribal drumming, Neron combined live music and fashion for a stunning visual impact that had the audience applauding and cheering as Caroline took her final walk down the runway with her models. This talented Canadian designer has already made her mark on Montreal Fashion Week, and Toronto was just one more step in bringing her sexy and feminine jewellery to the masses.

Jay Manuel shows off his ATTITUDE

Best known as a T.V. personality on America's Next Top Model, Jay Manuel shows us another side of him that focuses on fashion design for the real woman.

The show started almost an hour late but it was a packed house. Beforehand, there were many who scoffed at the idea of "ATTITUDE by Jay Manuel"- but they need to get off their high horses. The show was worth the wait proved many naysayers wrong.

Right before the show began, volunteers peeled a thin layer of plastic off the runway to unveil a shiny catwalk. As the show began, a cloud of dry ice covered the runway. Pair the dry ice with the friction-free catwalk and the result might be a slip here or there, or in Yasmin Warsame's case, an unfortunate fall. Yasmin struggled to get up but an audience member helped her get to her feet before the crowd cheered her on.

Models walked down the runway in this Spring/Summer 2012 collection, which was a stunning interpretation of the global traveler. We saw colourful separates, printed headscarves, straw fedoras, tie-died tops, silk jumpers and jersey dresses.

This is Jay Manuel's second collection for ATTITUDE and he's getting better by the season. The collection goes to show that you can look runway ready on any budget.

The ATTITUDE Jay Manuel collection is priced from $12.97 to $179.99 with sizes in 0-18 and is sold exclusively at Sears locations nationwide.

Cougar Boots - Giving them the Test Run

A pair of boots that's warm, comfy and stylish - I don't buy it!

A few weeks back, Matchstick sent over a pair of Cougar Boots and I've been giving them the test run. I've been wearing them around town, to do my errands, go to events and even in the rain (especially this past week).

I was pleasantly surprised. These boots are leather and suede with a polar plush lining for those cold winter days, which luckily, we haven't experienced yet (I hope I didn't jinx it).

They have a 2.5" wedge which gives me a bit of height (I'm 5'2, I'll take whatever I can get) and were incredibly comfortable when I wore them all day, not to mention, they worked with most of my outfits. Don't get me wrong, I do love a good pair of heels but rain + heels = deadly. Maybe this is the answer. I won't trade in my heels for the world but this boot might just be the answer.

It's emotionally charged and too often ignored. It can lead to lowered self-confidence and, in a few cases, even suicide. Some schools are implementing Anti-Bullying Awareness Week, but my question is: why is it only a week long?

Acupuncture has always piqued my curiosity but yet, I've always been hesitant to try it. Before my appointment at the Scollard Acupuncture Clinic with Dr. Peter Pavolotsky, I had a few sheets of paperwork to fill out and some information to look through. I was going for the $125 offering which includes, Complete Chinese Medical Assessment – comprehensive Chinese medicine health profile; Complete Chinese Medical Assessment, Chinese Medical Chronic Pain Treatment; Chinese Medical Health Restoration Treatment, Chinese Herbal Treatment, and Chinese Medical Shiatsu Massage.

During the assessment process, I quickly understood why there were so many forms to fill out and so much information to read through. Dr. Pavolotsky explains that Chinese medicine is quite different from Western medicine, but when combined together, can work quite harmoniously. He spent a great deal of time explaining the differences and going through my Chinese medicine health profile and explained it in terms I understood - he even broke out the pen and paper and drew diagrams. After an extensive assessment, the acupuncture treatment began. I was shocked at the painlessness of the needles. I hardly felt a thing - I kid you not.Dr. Pavolotsky adjusted the needles a few times and in minutes, it was over. Easy peasy.

The key to acupuncture is to find a good doctor, not just someone who practices in their spare time.

This was my first spa experience ever, and let’s justsay, it’s one memory I will gladly keep. I started my day off with avisit to METROsexual, The Spa For Men. It was a gloomy day out and Ididn’t really plan for the combination of wind and cold, but the cup of warm green tea offered to me by reception when I walked in,instantly warmed up my insides and had me looking forward to mytreatment.

I went with the $125 package which includes a 30 minutes full bodyexfoliation scrub which was basically a mini-massage initself. The hydro marine scrub left my skin feeling refreshed andsmooth, I was in heaven and it was only 30 minutes. Josh's Treatment #2 - A Complete Facial

I will admit I did have a difficulttime finding the place as there is no sign outside that says "Aesthetics Skin Care by Angela" nor does it say it on the little door listing the otherbusiness in the building. But I took a leap of faith and assumed theaddress was right….and it was!

So after having found my next appointment, I eagerly went inside andfilled out the necessary paper work and got underway. The treatmentstarted off with a mini-consultation, asking what type of skin I have andhow it reacts to certain products in order to customize the facialto my skins needs.

We started off with the extraction process, which I was told byeveryone else that this part would hurt, I didn’t really find it thatpainful, we can chalk that up to my ultra manliness. Following theextraction, my face was treated to a great massage/exfoliation withsalts and minerals from the dead-sea, which allows the pores to breathewhile rejuvenating the skin.The final portion of my treatment was an organic facemask, this isactually the process where I dozed off and fell asleep for a good10 minutes - by the time I woke up Angela was just walkingin the door getting ready to remove the mask. With a fresh nap under mybelt and an immediate and noticeable difference in my skin, I walked awayall smiles and extremely satisfied with my entire spa experience.

Ottawa Fashion Week is about to get fully underway, and our own Toronto based designer Rachel Sin is getting ready to unveil her new S/S 12 line to the fashion loving masses on Oct 1st. Tackling her designs with the idea that if “architecture should be functional, than clothing should be first and foremost comfortable” making Rachel’s designs perfect for adding a little flare and style to office life or spending an evening out with wine and friends.

Fresh from showing her Fall/Winter line, I had the opportunity to see the previous collection at Toronto Alternative Fashion Week and after seeing her style and design in person, I am really wishing I could be in Ottawa for this show. Not only are we expecting to see the strong and modern architectural structuring to the outfits that Rachel is known for. But with Ottawa Fashion Week taking place in the Ottawa convention center, Sin’s line won’t be the only thing of hers on display. Unknown to most, Rachel actually had a hand in designing and developing the structure during her time as an intern. Anyone lucky enough to be in attendance during the week may be able to see the influence of the convention center in her collection as it glides down the runway in the building she helped create.

October 1st, 2011 marks the 13th annual fashion design competition and designer sale at Art of Fashion, held this year at the Pantages Hotel in Toronto from 7PM to 1AM during Nuit Blanche. Art of fashion is committed to fostering the careers of Canadian apparel and accessory designers by creating platforms for exposure.

“Year after year, I am overwhelmed by the amount of emerging Canadian fashion talent this competition attracts,” says Michelle Planche, founder of the non-profit, Art of Fashion. “This year, the judges will have an especially difficult time narrowing down our 10 designer finalists and choosing only one as Most Promising Designer,” she says.

Melody Bar Re-Launch

Last week Monday marked the re-launch of Melody Bar - the resto-lounge inside Toronto's oldest continuously running hotel The Gladstone Hotel. This new Melody Bar features reinvigorated Christina Zeidler designs, enhanced cocktail and dinner menus from Chef Marc Breton and locally made furniture. The redesign reflects the art-deco surroundings of Queen St. West and the new innovation & development that the area has been undergoing over the last several years. “After the groundbreaking re-launch of the landmark Gladstone Hotel five years ago, the Melody Bar’s revamp marks the next era of being a social hotspot and ‘resto-lounge’ for Torontonians to mingle, dine, and unwind,” adds Zeidler, whose new contemporary design will create a backdrop well-suited for the bar’s diverse crowd. The day-time will serve as a cafe-like space for meetings, coffee, & WiFi. While the evening will continue to have live entertainment, karaoke, dance parties & art-inspired events.

Cutler and Gross Opens in Toronto

Former high fashion model Caroline Granger began her career in Europe landing spreads in Vogue magazine in the 80s. Carolines' tastes for fine wine begain in her early career modelling, and fully blossomed later in life when she enrolled college to develop the craft of making wine. On Victoria Day in 2001 Caroline began planting grapevines. Fast forward years later, she owns the The Grange of Prince Edward Vineyard & Estate Winery. The Grange is the largest winery in Prince Edward County and is home to Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Gamay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc vines.

The Grangest newest wine to be release is their Pinot Noir 2008 Trumpour's Mill. The Trumpour's Mill Pinot Noir is a light bodied fruity red with notes of vanilla, strawberry, and spicy cranberry.
