CoolSculpting by Zeltiq® (Part II) - Where does all the fat go?

Dr. Trevor Born

Situated in Yorkville, on Avenue Road just north of Davenport Road, is Dr. Trevor Born's Toronto Office.

As you step foot through the doors, you see a waiting room decorated with old world charm paired with Terrazzo marble, comfortable and inviting.

In a matter of minutes, I was directed to a consultation room, where Dr. Born came in shortly after. He is charming, charismatic and friendly. After introductions, I proceed to question this "CoolSculpting" procedure - how can anyone not be curious?

WHAT IS COOLSCULPTING?
It is a non-invasive method of targeting the fat cells by freezing it, which triggers the body to remove and eliminate these cells.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
CoolSculpting device
Our body reacts to extreme cold and when the temperature falls below zero, the fat cells are destroyed but not muscle or other vital organs and the destroyed cells are removed from the body through the liver.

HOW LONG HAS THE COOLSCULPTING METHOD BEEN AVAILABLE?
As of Fall of 2009, it was available in Canada and is approved by Health Canada.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PEFORMING THIS PROCEDURE?
Since November 2009

HOW DOES THE BODY KNOW TO ELMINATE THE FROZEN FAT CELLS?
The Freezing of the fat actually triggers an early death of the fat cell - over two to three months.
Once the fat cells are frozen - they are triggered to die off earlier than normal. The body then eliminates them through the normal healingprocess - just like a cut.

WAS THIS METHOD TESTED SPECIFICALLY FOR FREEZING FAT CELLS?
Yes, a couple of scientists from Harvard University tested fat cell reactivity to freezing and heating, this is how the method of CoolSculpting by Zeltiq® came about.

HOW SAFE IS THE COOLSCULPTING METHOD AND WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?
It is very safe. Since it is an non-invasive body contouring method, there is no down time. Most patients do not experience any side effects, however, some may feel minor soreness or possible bruising. Ideally the patient will rest or reduced activities for a few days and it will subside.

IS THE METHOD OF BODY SCULPTING SUCCESSFUL?
Yes, patients see result as little as two weeks and the body continues to eliminate the destroyed fat cells over a period as long as four to six months.

HOW IS THIS METHOD PERFORMED?
A barrier is placed on the treated area to protect the skin and the machine grabs and sucks the area to be treated and the patient lies back and let the machine do the job.

HOW MUCH TIME IS REQUIRED FOR EACH ZELTIQ® APPOINTMENT
It depends on the patient and the areas to be treated. It takes about an hour per area to be treated. Most patient find it quite relaxing, they either bring their laptop, a book to read or simply take that evasion nap to destress.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY TIME
There is virtually no recovery time. After the treatment the patient is up and moving about and can resume their regular activities.
WHAT KIND OF RESULT CAN THE PATIENT EXPECT
On average there is an overall reduction of 20% or more in the area treated, for more information on individual results and photo gallery, check out: http://www.coolsculpting.ca/

WHO ARE THE BEST CANDIDATES FOR THIS TYPE OF PROCEDURE
Anyone who has 10 or 15 lbs to lose that lives a healthy lifestyle, but due to age or genetics, they have issues getting rid of the middle fat/love handle. This is not a weight loss solution and cannot, should not replace a healthy active lifestyles.

WHAT IS COST FOR THIS PROCEDURE
It is about $700.00 per section per treatment. Depending on the area, it may be two to four sections and if there are any back fats that need to be treated. The consultation for each individual will dictate the cost.

****************************************************************************

I asked question after question, Dr. Born explained and answered them all patiently. Overall, it was a very informative session, but I still wanted to know more. So...what is the next step, I asked. Dr. Born answered, "The next step is an appointment for a consultation to see if you would fit into the candidate profile for the CoolSculpting procedure." I thanked him and advised that I would be in touch with his office.

I have decided to go ahead with the consultation. I am not sure whether or not I would be a good candidate for the Zeltiq® method. I am not obese (at least I hope not, especially with the standards nowadays - but hey, if double zero is a size, I might just be obese). I do know that I am over weight, slightly above the 15lb mark. I am curious, anxious and anticipating my results of the consultation appointment.

Make sure to check back next week for my consultation results wth Dr. Born, to see if I fit the candidate profile for the CoolSculpting Zeltiq® non-invasive procedure.
